The US Open of Surfing is about to be underway and the first stop of the new revamped Dew Tour is just around the corner, but there are still headlines being made in the action sports world.
Recently, Burton Snowboards and Vail Resorts announced plans to move the Burton U.S. Open Snowboarding Championships from Vermont to Vail, Colo., starting in 2013. Vermont has hosted the open for almost three decades starting in 1985. The contest will be held from Feb. 25 – March 3, in the area of the resort called Golden Peak.
With new ski and snowboarding events being added to the 2014 Winter Olympics, the US Open is shifting its focus from halfpipe to other events like racing, rail jams and big airs, contests that come and go through the years. When the contest makes its debut in 2013, the main focus will be on slopestyle, which is now an official part of the Winter Olympics lineup.
Shaun White tweeted last Friday that he is undergoing knee surgery, forcing him to remove himself from competition at the Ocean City, Md., Dew Tour, Aug. 16-19, the final vert competition of the summer. The event would have been White first skate competition of the year. There is some feeling around the skate community, that this is the makings of the end of the Shaun White skate dominance with so many other riders emerging and eclipsing the veterans.
“Getting knee surgery. Not skating, still heading to @DewTour. Thanks to all for the support. be handplanting again soon,” read White’s Twitter feed.
Finally, August 8, 2012 marks the debut of a new insanity. Travis Pastrana and the Nitro Circus crew launch their film “Nitro Circus; 3D”. I have seen the film and highly recommend that you go watch it on the big screen. It will be a highlight of your summer.
