2012-2013 Resort Preview: Deer Valley

December 8, 2012 brings another chance for you to be the first person on the lift to score the first tracks of the season as Deer Valley opens for the 2012-2013 season.

Recently SKI Magazine released their rankings of the Top 10 Ski Resorts in North America, Deer Valley ranked #2. After five years in a row at #1, these rankings show what a quality resort we have in the state along with our other resorts that are ranked.

Deer Valley topped the charts in SKI’s annual reader survey, earning a #1 ranking in six separate categories and the #2 overall best ski resort in North America. SKI Magazine’s annual poll asks readers to rank North American ski resorts in 20 categories. Prior to this year, Deer Valley held the #1 overall best ski resort ranking in North America for five years running. No resort has done it more than three years in a row, Deer Valley have seven number one overall rankings (2001, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012).

What is it about Deer Valley that qualifies these ranking numbers?

“Deer Valley’s high rankings are a direct result of the resort’s service, grooming and other five-star experiences,” said Emily Summers, Communications Manager at Deer Valley Resort. “These amenities are the basis of Deer Valley’s operations, and also make up many of the categories in SKI’s reader survey. The resort received #1 rankings in six categories: Grooming, Service, On-Mountain Food, Dining, Lodging and Family Programs. Altogether, Deer Valley earned 14 Top-10 spots in SKI’s annual reader poll.”

Aside from their #1 rankings in six categories, Deer Valley ranked in the top-10 in several other categories:

# 1 for Grooming, Service, Lodging, On-Mountain Food, Dining and Family
# 2 for Weather and Access – Utah boasts several resorts an hour away from Salt Lake International Airport. Utah is unmatched in having resort access so close that you can be skiing within an hour after you land.
# 3 for Lifts
#5 for Digital Presence and Overall Satisfaction
#6 for Scenery
#7 for Apres Ski and Off-Hill Activities
#10 for Snow

Deer Valley takes roots from the state in a way that the resort is built on service. When asked what is the biggest contributor to these rankings making Deer Valley a beacon for skiers from around the world, Bob Wheaton, Deer Valley President and General Manager, always credits the commitment of the Deer Valley Staff.

“Our consistent success is built on the foundation of a great staff that provides exquisite service,” said Wheaton. “Deer Valley’s commitment to excellent service matters to our employees as much as it matters to our guests. We are here for our staff and guests, so if they are happy, we are happy. We’re doing our job properly.”

In a time where the economy has made gainful employment harder to find, Deer Valley consistently offers several employment opportunities with the number of total employees increasing from 200 their first season to over 2,500 today with several employees returning every year whom have worked at the Resort 20 years or more.

With over $140 million in improvements spent since the resort opened in 1981, Deer Valley has become known as a Mecca for freestyle skiing events. Having successfully hosted six World Cups, the 2002 Olympic Winter Games freestyle events, the 2003 and 2011 FIS Freestyle World Ski Championships and the Chevy Truck U.S. Freestyle Championships in 1999, making Deer Valley Resort the only North American resort that has hosted freestyle World Ski Championships twice.
