The major storyline surrounding of X Games Los Angeles Day 1 finished Thursday night as Vicki Golden broke a barrier and walked away with the bronze medal in X Games Moto Best Whip with Josh Hansen finally claiming a much deserved gold medal.
“This gold medal feels so good,” said Hansen. “I am so relieved to finally get the gold medal in Best Whip. To be able to get the gold in LA, the hometown, in the final stop here, I couldn’t ask for a better ending.”
In a six minute jam format, each rider put their Best Whip out for the social media world to vote for their favorite in a Twitter Fan vote.
Vicki Golden entered the competition as the first female rider invited to compete against the men and she led the jam session off with the first whip that brought loud cheers from the enormous Staples Center crowd.
After a few shaky whips, Golden settled down and put together a great combination landing her with a bronze medal.
“This bronze medal feels awesome,” Golden said. “I love to whip my bike around and I am honored that I was invited to be here to compete. It was a long process to get here but it is all worth it. I set personal goals to accomplish this competition and I could not be any happier.”
Being the first female moto rider to compete against the men in does not intimidate Golden as she stated she races against the men often.
“For me riding with the guys is almost second nature,” Golden said. “I grew up racing against them since there were not many females racing when I was young. I know to many this was a big deal, but for me it was an accomplishment of a personal goal and I am really happy at how the way things turned out.”
