Freeski Team USA athlete Nick Goepper successfully defended his Men’s Ski Slopestyle Gold needing his third run to secure the win.
Utah local McRae Williams took the silver and Norway’s Andreas Hatveit, the bronze.
After a heated battle between the athletes, Goepper solidified his win by sticking a solid run as the only skier without poles. With the win Goepper became the first man since Tanner Hall in 2004 to win back-to-back slopestyle skiing gold medals at X Games.
“I love coming to Aspen to compete,” said Goepper. “This course here is amazing. Snow Park Technologies does an amazing job with the course set up was amazing. Winning back to back here is an amazing feeling. Winning once here is a dream come true, so winning two just builds even more momentum for me going to Sochi. To be in a category as a rider to win back to back, to be mentioned in the same sentence as Tanner (Hall) I couldn’t be more happy to be where I am at.”
On winning the silver medal, McRae Williams was ecstatic.
“I am skiing some of the best in my career,” said Williams. “After a great weekend at the Grand Prix’s in Park City, Utah last weekend, I had so much confidence coming into X Games. I used that and was even leading throughout the competition. Being on the podium is amazing. I’m not done yet.”
