In the half mile straight line head to head racing, Musquin never needed to go to a third and final race in the best of three format. Musquin becomes only the second back to back champion of the event alongside James Stewart as the other back to back winner.
“Coming into the race I felt really confident about where I am as a rider and where we were as a team,” said Musquin post race. “I really enjoy this event and the format. It makes for some fun racing and I am happy to come away with the win.”
The unique straight race track features everything seen in a supercross race but with zero turns. The head-to-head best of three races in a bracket challenge makes the racing intriguing but ultra competitive.
The Lites Class featured the tightest racing of the night with several of the head-to-head matchups coming down to photo finishes. Shane McElrath also became a back-to-back champion after a tough battle with racing rookie Sean Cantrell.
“The whole Troy Lee KTM team was amazing tonight,” said McElrath. “To have myself, Sean and Alex (Martin) on the podium together is special. It really shows how strong of a team we have. We train together and we push each other to be our best on the track. It was a lot of fun to race together tonight.”
This years’ event featured the first ever Two-Stroke Shootout where legends of the sport came back to their racing roots to compete on the two-stroke.
Ryan Villopoto, four time AMA Supercross champion, was one of those legends to be a part of the shootout.
“It’s fun, a lot of fun,” said Villopoto. “I have enjoyed the process of getting the bike put together, the race preparation and more that comes with the competition. It has been a minute or two since being on a bike competitively so this was a lot of fun for me.”
